Rate as 4 out of 5, 4 stars. It's also worth mentioning that it's during these tutorials when the style seems the least authentic to actual manga to me, anyway , but that might not bother you. While the included step-by-step tutorials are easy to follow, the instruction basically boils down to "put these lines here, then put these lines here," and while that simplifies matters, it doesn't really give you the sense that you're drawing a three-dimensional form, which is important if you plan on drawing more complex angles and poses. ❿

Ebook pages 1 hour. Currently unavailable on Scribd. There's more to manga than big, shiny eyes and funky hair. In these action-packed pages, graphic novelist Mark Crilley shows you step-by-step how to achieve an authentic manga stylefrom drawing faces and figures to laying out awesome, high-drama spreads.

You'll learn how a few basic lines will help you place facial features in their proper locations and simple tricks for getting body proportions right. Plus, you'll find inspiration for infusing your work with expression, attitude and action.

This is the book fans have been requesting for years, packed with expert tips on everything from hairstyles and clothing to word bubbles and sound effects, delivered in the same friendly, easy-to-follow style that has made Mark Crilley one of the "25 Most Subscribed to Gurus on YouTube.

Packed with everything you need to make your first or your best-ever manga stories! Language English. Publisher Penguin Group. Where the book excels is as a visual reference. It's a lot of fun looking at the sheer variety and picking out something you'd like to incorporate into your own drawings, and you can certainly learn something from analyzing how the drawings are done.

That said, I feel like one or two from each of these spreads should be pulled out and expanded into a tutorial or in-depth explanation. Also, it kind of irks me that even in these spreads, the mouth, ears, and nose are almost always drawn in the same exact way, which is disappointing after reading in the beginning of the book that there are many different ways to draw manga which is true.

Indeed, most of the drawings in this book seem very similar in style, which makes me wary of falling into the trap of copying that style rather than developing my own. That might just be me, though, and you can certainly supplement this book with others if you think it might be a problem. The last section covers perspective and various manga construction topics like inking and paneling techniques. While your mileage may vary with these collections of tips spanning only a fifth of the book , which seem about as perfunctory as many of the other tutorials, they do round out the package with valuable information and make it seem more complete.

In short, I can easily recommend this as a supplementary visual reference, but don't expect it to really teach you how to draw, or perhaps more importantly, develop your own style. That said, keep in mind the author also uploads various how-to-draw-manga videos to his Youtube channel which you may want to peruse and follow.

On a side note, don't be misled by other reviewers' comments saying this book is superior to most of what you can find nowadays. There are plenty of series out there with various strengths and weaknesses, and relying on this book alone or any one book alone, for that matter would be a grave mistake in my opinion. Although they're in Japanese, I think you can learn a lot just from following along with the drawings, of which there are loads. I provide this list not to dissuade you from buying Mark Crilley's book, but to encourage supplementing it with additional references.

In my opinion it's worth the money. I plan on buying the other 2. I love the step by step instructions and guidelines for learning the basics and being able to add your own style. Overall great starting book!

Like most people, I discovered Mark Crilley from his excellent tutorials on Youtube. I had high expectations of this book because I know he's a great teacher, but I wasn't sure how it would compare with the videos. You're probably wondering what you get from buying a book that the Youtube videos don't show for free. I've watched lots of Mark Crilley's tutorials, but there's something special about seeing the drawing printed on the page in front of me, there as a reference.

If you wanted to, you could trace drawings for practice. The book also allows you to go at your own pace, which may take much longer than a ten-minute video can allow for. I think the book works well on its own or in combination with the videos. The bulk of the book is made up of step-by-step guides for drawing specific character types. Adults, teens, kids and toddlers are covered, as well as chibis.

The written instructions give tips about showing the gender, age and personality of the characters. One thing that sets this book apart is that several pages are devoted to portraying fuller-figured characters, something that I haven't seen much in other manga how-to books. There are also more advanced tutorials for kissing poses and drawing a martial arts scene, as well as thorough instruction for drawing folds and wrinkles in clothing.

Some of the most useful content is towards the end. There's information about inking drawings, laying out panels and adding speech bubbles and sound effects. One of the most interesting parts is a page showing Mark Crilley's process in creating a manga page from start to finish. Quite a few page spreads feature a large number of small drawings, for example manga eyes or 50 ways to draw hands.

These are good for reference and include some pointers, but there are some that would be worth expanding into a full step-by-step tutorial. I'd love a whole book based on the 20 classic poses! Perspective and backgrounds are covered in the third chapter, and this is another area that I wouldn't mind seeing expanded.

The tutorials cover the technicalities of perspective, but they don't show much about how to work characters into these settings. I would also have liked to see more discussion of shading and color. Everything included in the book is great and it's absolutely packed with helpful information on every page, but I do think the author has even more to offer and I'd love it if this turned out to be the first part of a series.

One final note: There's no nudity in this book; all figures are drawn either fully clothed or wearing simple underclothes. Busty vixens and muscle men are notably absent. There's no gore, the content is very family-friendly.

This book would be an appropriate gift for adolescents interested in drawing manga. However, the detailed level of instruction would probably be too difficult for young children. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries. I found the images in this book extremely dull. Also the format is basically here's a face, one example; next page here a hand, one example; next page There are just too few examples. Drawing advice is just common sense like how you usiall divide up a circle with lines to draw a face.

The author would have better focused on something more narrow, like manga faces, then the author could have given more than just 1 male example, 1 female example. This book for beginners is incredible! Like perspective images in a scene, hands in different positions, eyes and emotions.

This is jam packed full of useful information that takes you far beyond manga. Not quite up to the expectations, its an okay book - but it is more of a follow along book rather than a how to draw book. To sum up this book would be more useful to someone who already has some idea on how to draw - it is not for the complete novice who has no idea how to draw, sure they can follow along and get good results as the information contained in the book is detailed enough, but it will not leave you with enough knowledge to create your own characters and poses easily.

I learnt of Mark Crilley from his videos on YouTube and was blown away by how good he was at illustrating characters on paper, plus the fact he was both a published author of his own manga and Mastering manga series was by far the most appealing beginner go to book for learning how to draw manga properly.

It opens with a brief period on learning to draw eyes a page is included detailing a lot of others eye illustration to emulate and develop your own take or twist on them, this is also included by similar pages on hair, hands, and feet and followed immediately by drawing the entire face. It also details learning body proportions for all manners of possible characters and lessons on how to draw a fluent stride to create movement in the pages and the desired perspective to help make the drawing appear more lifelike.

So far my drawings have benefited greatly from this book, as the basis of the face drawing facial placement can be transferred into fine art drawings, and bolstered my abilities in both art forms. I am working on integration between the two until I develop my own take or style on manga and illustration.

This brilliant book is awarded 5 out of 5. Great for those beginning in manga drawing. Would not recommend this for figure drawing. Used this when I was developing my style. If there's one area where I think this book is lacking, it's in drawing the head and body. While the akoko step-by-step tutorials are easy to amiko, the instruction mastering manga with mark crilley 30 drawing lessons from the creator of akiko download boils down to "put these lines here, then put these lines here," and while that simplifies matters, it doesn't really give you the mastering manga with mark crilley 30 drawing lessons from the creator of akiko download that you're drawing a three-dimensional form, which is important if you plan on drawing more complex angles and poses.

If cfeator try to jastering beyond generic front and side view drawings, you might be stymied somewhat by this book, as beyond analyzing the reference drawings, there's not much here that you can apply.

Is it really worth spending four additional pages just on those two differences, especially considering this book is leaner with regard to page count than most manga drawing books out there? Couldn't they have been merged with the other front and oblique view tutorials? I could say the crysis 2 pc game trainer about drawing children's faces. It would have been nice to see at least one step-by-step on high and low-angle viewpoints.

Sometimes it feels as though the author is pushing his political views on how manga should shouldn't? It's also worth mentioning that it's during these tutorials when the style seems the least authentic to actual manga to me, anywaybut that might not bother you.

Another thing that irritates me is that the body section seems to focus more on drawing the outline of the clothed figure than читать статью actual anatomy. This might appease people who are offended by nudity by default, but I can't say it'll really teach you how to draw the human form. Больше на странице tutorials in particular also somehow seem the least authentic in terms of style- again, just my downooad. Overall, it's a shame that the sections on drawing the head and body seem the weakest, both because they're what budding artists will likely struggle with first and because these two topics take up half of the book.

Where the book excels is as a visual reference.
